Words cannot describe my sorrow over the tragic mass shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday. It is hard to wrap my brain around the fact that a fellow human being could walk into that synagogue and kill those innocent men and women as they gathered to worship. And yet we have seen this movie before. As a parallel our Mini but Mighty devotional this week focuses on the life of Esther who saved her fellow Jews from certain annihilation about 2,500 years ago.
Have you ever wondered why over the centuries anti-Semitism keeps rearing its ugly head? I believe the reason goes all the way back to Genesis 15 where God made a unilateral solemn covenant with Abraham, the father of the Jews. He made promises to Abraham that included a specific land, his descendants (the Jews) and blessings, then He pledged His very life if these promises did not come to fruition. Seems to me the enemy of our souls has a strategy to annihilate the Jews so that God will be made into a liar and rendered incapable of fulfilling His covenant with Abraham.
We see this strategy repeated again and again. Meanwhile one of our privileges as believers in the Messiah is to pray for the peace of Jerusalem which includes praying for the welfare of the Jews.
